RESPONSES TO COUNCILLOR INQUIRIES

7.1

Elimination of Door to Door Delivery by Canada Post - Effects on the City of Edmonton (B. Henderson/A. Sohi)

L. Brenneis, Community Services, made a presentation.

B. Ray and S. Cowtan, Canadian Union of Postal Workers, made a presentation and answered the Committee's questions. A handout provided by B. Ray and S. Cowtan was distributed to members of the Committee and a copy was filed with the Office of the City Clerk.

L. Brenneis, E. Betchinski and R. Smythe, Acting General Manager, Community Services; and B. Dunford, Transportation Services, answered the Committee's questions.

That Community Services Committee recommend to City Council:

That the Mayor on behalf of City Council write a letter to the Federal Government and Canada Post to express the City's concerns arising from the proposed elimination of door-to-door delivery, including but not limited to:

Concerns about planning and transportation issues arising from retrofitting super mailboxes into existing neighbourhoods and the associated costs.
Accessibility issues for seniors and persons with disabilities.
Issues of litter, snow removal and the costs of dealing with these issues.
Policing and safety costs arising from going to centralized delivery.
